What comes before 40? A quick worksheet for number neighbors

Kids answer “what comes after 12” instantly. “What comes before 12” gets a pause and a finger count from one. This sheet is for the pause.

Ask a kindergartner what comes after 12 and you get 13 straight away. Ask what comes before 12 and there is a pause, a quiet count up from one on the fingers, and then 11. That pause is the whole reason this sheet exists.

What the sheet looks like

The before, after and between generator prints rows of small boxes with one number given and the others left empty. You choose what to find: before and after, before only, after only, between two numbers, or a mixed page. A separate “ten more, ten less cross” mode puts one number in the middle with ten less above it, ten more below, one less to the left and one more to the right.

The range runs from 1–20 for kindergarten up to 4-digit numbers, and the counting step can be 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s or 100s. So the same tool makes “what comes before 7” and “what comes 100 after 2,350”. Twelve to twenty-four problems fit a page, and the answer key is a checkbox.

Why it works

  • Counting backwards is a separate skill from counting forwards, and most children get far less practice at it. A before-only page fixes that in ten minutes.
  • The between mode (what sits between 48 and 50) is the first real test of whether a child sees numbers as a line rather than a chant.
  • Skip-count steps turn the same layout into a quiet times-table warm-up. Before and after by 5s is a different task from by 1s.

Who it suits

The 1–20 range suits late kindergarten. By second grade the 3-digit range with a 10s step is a better fit, and the cross mode is good mental-math practice at that age too. Children who still count up from one to find “before” should have a hundreds chart next to them for the first few sheets. Take it away once the pauses go.

Print one before-only page and one after-only page in the same week and compare how the pencil marks look on each.
