Brain break cards, a dice and a spinner for the restless half hour

Hop on one foot and count to 8. Thirty seconds later everyone sits back down and the writing continues.

Twenty minutes into a writing block, a second grade room gets wiggly. The teacher I print for pulls a card from a cup: "Hop on one foot and count to 8." Thirty seconds later everyone sits back down and the writing continues. The cup is the trick. Choosing the break on the spot is where the time goes.

What the sheet looks like

The brain break cards generator prints from a bank of about 95 quick breaks that need no equipment and fit beside a desk. Tick the kinds you want: movement (10 jumping jacks, march in place for 20 steps), calm, silly, brain games, or partner breaks like mirror your partner's moves for 15 seconds. Then pick a format: cards at 8 or 12 to a page, a fold-up brain break die, a paper-clip spinner, a 3×3 pick-a-break choice board with tick boxes, or a numbered teacher list of 20.

You can add up to 24 of your own class favorites, and there is a switch to include a few ball breaks if you have one handy.

Why it works

  • A break with a number in it (count to 8, touch your toes 10 times) ends itself. Open-ended breaks do not end, which is why teachers stop using them.
  • The die and spinner hand the choice to a child. Nobody argues with a die.
  • Calm cards beside movement cards mean the same cup works before a test and after lunch.

Who it suits

Pre-K through grade 5, and honestly home too; a die on the kitchen table works for homework breaks. Pre-K and K do best with movement only and the die, since the cards are text and they cannot read them yet. Partner breaks and brain games suit grades 2 and up. For checking how the room is feeling rather than moving it, the feelings check-in is the quieter companion.

Print the choice board on cardstock. The tick boxes get used up by Wednesday.
