Color code worksheets teach key reading before map reading does

Most preschool sheets say color the thing. This one is the reverse: the thing is already colored and the child has to read a key. It's their first legend.

Most preschool worksheets say "color the thing." This one is the reverse. The thing is already colored, and the child has to work out which number each color stands for by looking it up in a key at the top of the page. It is the first legend they will ever read, and at four it is harder than it looks.

What the sheet looks like

The color code worksheet prints a key of numbered colored circles, 1 to N, then a set of questions. In the color rows layout each question is a row of colored circles read left to right, with empty circles beside it for the numbers. In the color rings layout each question is a set of concentric rings read from the outside in. Mixed does both. You pick 3 to 8 colors (three gives red, yellow and green; four adds blue, then orange, purple, pink and teal), 4 to 12 questions, whether to show one solved example, and an answer key. Every question uses each key color exactly once. It does need a color printer.

Why it works

  • Look up, match, come back. That is the same move as reading a map key or a graph legend.
  • Rings read from the outside toward the center, so a child can't lean on left-to-right. They have to hold a direction in their head.
  • Because every color appears once per question, a finished answer should have no repeated numbers. A child who writes 3 twice can find their own mistake.

Who it suits

At four, rows only, 3 colors, 4 questions. Seven- and eight-year-olds can do Mixed with 8 colors and 12 questions, where pink, purple and red need a careful look. When the key is easy, the math code breaker is the next step: the same decoding idea, but each key value has to be worked out first.

If the printer is low on ink, stay at 3 or 4 colors. Teal and blue blur together at the end of a cartridge.
