Days of the week and months of the year, in order, without the song

Plenty of six-year-olds can sing all twelve months and still not tell you what comes after June. This sheet asks the second question.

Our kindergarten class can sing the months song from start to finish. Ask one of them what comes after June, on its own, and you get a long pause and then the whole song from January. The sequence is in there, but only as one long string. Taking it apart is the work.

What the sheet looks like

The months and days worksheet generator prints one of four activities for either set of names. Put in order gives a word bank and numbered blanks. What comes next gives two names and asks for the third. Before and after is a table with the middle column filled in. Unscramble gives the letters jumbled. The Mixed option puts a short version of all four on one page, and the full list prints at the bottom as a reference, so a child who gets stuck can look rather than guess.

Why it works

  • What comes next and Before and after force the child to start in the middle of the sequence. That is the skill the song never builds.
  • The word bank means spelling Wednesday is not the obstacle. The child is sorting, not spelling, until you switch to Unscramble.
  • The reference list at the bottom lets a child check their own work, which is faster than waiting for you.

Who it suits

Days of the week with Put in order is fine for a kindergartner who can match words. Months with Before and after is a solid grade 1 or 2 task. Unscramble is the hardest option here and is really a spelling exercise, so save it for a child who already knows the order. Once the sequence is settled, the monthly calendar generator is the natural next step, because now the names mean something.

One sheet a week for a month covers it. There is not much more to this skill than that.
