What an equal parts sheet teaches before fractions get numbers

Before a child can read one half, they need to know that two unequal pieces are not halves. This sheet makes them look at the cut, not the number.

Two kids, one cookie, and the one doing the breaking somehow ends up with the bigger half. Every child understands that this is not fair. That instinct is the whole foundation of fractions, and it is worth spending a few sheets on it before anyone writes a numerator.

What the sheet looks like

The equal parts worksheet generator prints circles, squares and rectangles divided into two, three or four parts. Some are divided fairly and some are not. The six activities build on each other: circle the shapes with equal parts, color only the shapes that show halves (or thirds or fourths), draw the lines yourself and color one part, color a given fraction, color part of a group of shapes, and match shapes to ½, ⅓ and ¼. You pick Halves, Halves and fourths, or all three, and 4 to 12 shapes per page.

Why it works

  • The unfair cuts are the point. A rectangle split with one line off-center looks like halves at a glance, and the child has to decide it is not.
  • Draw lines to divide is the first time the child has to make the parts equal, not just judge them. A square into fourths has two good answers, and kids notice.
  • Color part of the group moves from one shape to a set, which is where fractions of a collection start, without changing the vocabulary.

Who it suits

Circle the equal parts with Halves only is kindergarten. Divide and color with all three part sizes is a good grade 1 or 2 task. Match to fractions introduces the written symbols and should come last. After that, the fractions worksheet picks up with proper numerators and denominators. Do not start there; start here.

If you have a real cookie handy, break it unfairly in front of them first.
