Hindi varnamala tracing sheets for a child who hears Hindi only at home

One Devanagari letter, one whole page, nine small jobs. It is how our after-dinner Hindi lessons finally stuck.

Our daughter speaks Hindi with her grandmother on a video call every Sunday and cannot read a letter of it. Her school teaches English. So the letters are a kitchen-table job, fifteen minutes after dinner, one letter at a time.

What the sheet looks like

The Hindi alphabet tracing generator has two layouts. The letter activity page gives one letter a whole sheet with nine small activities: a big letter to color, tracing rows, boxes, a copy line, free writing, find-the-letter, the classroom क से कमल word to trace, and the मात्रा signs (बारहखड़ी) for that letter. Tracing rows is the classic worksheet instead, up to 13 letters per page: the 13 vowels (स्वर), the 33 consonants (व्यंजन), or all 46.

Letters print as outlines or faded, and you set the repeats per row. Everything is black and white, sized to fill the page.

Why it works

  • Devanagari letters hang from a headline. Tracing teaches that from the first letter, before a child invents a floating version.
  • The क से कमल word ties the shape to a word the child already says. कमल is a lotus, and the letter stops being abstract.
  • The बारहखड़ी row shows one consonant becoming का, कि, की and so on, so a reader later holds no surprises.

Who it suits

Activity pages suit four- to six-year-olds, one letter a day. Tracing rows with all 46 letters are for a seven- or eight-year-old reviewing the whole varnamala. If Faded is too easy, switch to Outline. A child new to pencils should start on the English alphabet tracing sheets, since the Hindi strokes are longer and curvier. A couple of consonants (ङ, ञ) have no kid-level word, and the page says so rather than inventing one.

Print today's letter plus yesterday's. Review first, then new.
