A word search with your child's spelling list in it

By Wednesday the spelling list is radioactive. By Thursday it is a word search and gets read ten more times.

The weekly spelling list comes home on Monday in a plastic sleeve. By Wednesday my son has written each word three times and would rather not look at them again. A word search with those exact ten words gets read again on Thursday, without complaint, because it is a puzzle and not a list.

What the sheet looks like

The word search generator builds a grid of capital letters with the word bank listed below it. Themes include Animals (CAT, DOG, LION, TIGER, BEAR, HORSE, ZEBRA, RABBIT, MONKEY, ELEPHANT), Fruits, Colors, School, Family and Ocean, ten words each, or you choose Custom words and type your own. Grid size is 10×10 for younger kids, 12×12 standard, or 14×14 for a harder hunt. Include answer key prints a second copy with the words marked.

Why it works

  • Finding RABBIT in a grid means scanning for R, A, B in order, letter by letter. It is visual spelling practice that does not involve writing anything.
  • The word bank gets read ten times over while hunting. For a custom list, that is ten more exposures to the week's words without being asked to study.
  • Words run in more than one direction, so every candidate letter has to be checked across and down. The 14×14 just has more places to look.

Who it suits

10×10 with a short theme like Colors suits six- and seven-year-olds. 12×12 is the right default for eight to ten. 14×14 with long custom words is for eleven- and twelve-year-olds and makes a good substitute-teacher page. When ordinary grids get too easy, the SuperPosition word search rotates and mirrors the letters and is a genuine step up.

Print the key. Someone will ask for it by Friday.
