Six passes over one sight word, from tracing it to using it

The word they does not sound like it looks and cannot be sounded out. Six different passes over it on one page is how it finally sticks.

Flashcards work for some sight words and not for others. My daughter had "they" on a card for a month and still read it as "the" every time it came up in a book. What finally fixed it was building it from letter tiles and noticing the y at the end. Different children need different passes at a word.

What the sheet looks like

The sight word practice generator gives every word a block of rows: read it in large print, trace it in dotted letters, write it on handwriting lines, build it from shuffled letter tiles, find it three times among look-alike words, and use it in a sentence. Two words per page gets all six rows; four words per page keeps read, trace, write and find. Words come from the Dolch lists, Pre-Primer through Grade 3 plus the nouns, or you type up to 20 of your own. Letter case can be lowercase, like a book, or Title Case. The other worksheet type, colour the word, is a bubble grid with a color key.

Why it works

  • Build it from shuffled tiles forces attention to the letters in order. A child who recognizes "they" by shape has to actually find the t, h, e and y.
  • Find it among look-alikes is where "they" sits next to "the" and "then" and the child has to tell them apart on purpose. That is the exact mistake they make in books, isolated.
  • Use it in a sentence is the only row that checks the child knows what the word means.

Who it suits

Pre-Primer at two words per page is a pre-K and kindergarten sheet. Grade 1 and 2 lists at four words per page suit a child who already writes comfortably and needs volume. Type your own words when the school sends home a list. Once single words are solid, the sight word phrases sheet puts them into short phrases, which is the step toward reading them in a sentence without stopping.

Keep the finished pages. Re-reading last month's words is the fastest review there is.
