Word scrambles with a picture clue, for kids who can't read the hint yet

GITRE is TIGER if you know it is an animal. The picture next to the scramble is what makes this work for a six-year-old.

Unscrambling GITRE into TIGER is easy if you know the word is an animal. It is nearly impossible for a six-year-old if you do not. A written hint does not help a child who cannot read the hint. The picture beside the word is what makes this version work for early readers.

What the sheet looks like

The word scramble generator prints each scrambled word next to a small drawing of the answer, with one blank per letter underneath. Themes are Animals, Fruits & food, Sports, Space, Weather, School, Colors, Holidays and Ocean, all with pictures, or you paste your own list. Choose 8 words for younger kids, 12 standard, or 16 for a full page. Show word bank lists the answers at the bottom, and the answer key prints separately.

Why it works

  • The blanks give the length, the picture gives the meaning, the scramble gives the letters. All that is left is spelling, which is the point.
  • With the word bank on, it is matching: find the animal with these letters. With it off, the child has to spell from the picture alone. Same sheet, two levels.
  • Putting letters in order is phonics run backward. A child who writes TIGRE has heard every sound and lost the sequence, which tells you exactly what to work on.

Who it suits

Eight words with the bank on suits five- to seven-year-olds. Twelve words with the bank off is a second- or third-grade page. Sixteen custom words from a spelling list is a fifth-grade sheet. Once single words are easy, the sentence scramble does the same thing with word order instead of letter order.

Hit New puzzle before printing a second copy, or the two kids at the table will compare.
