ABC Order Worksheet Generator

A quick way to build alphabetical-order practice for Kindergarten through Grade 3. Pick a themed word list (or mixed vocabulary), choose whether kids should number the words, rewrite the list on lines, or circle the word that comes first in each pair, and dial in the difficulty — first-letter sort, second-letter sort, or third-letter sort. Print straight from the browser with or without an answer key.

Easy words all begin with a different letter. Medium and Hard mix in pairs and triples that share the first letter (or the first two) so kids have to compare further into the word.

How to use this worksheet

  • Number mode keeps every word on the page — kids write 1, 2, 3, … beside each word to show its ABC position. Best for a first introduction to alphabetizing.
  • Rewrite mode gives blank lines under each row so kids copy the words in the right order — a small handwriting workout alongside the sorting practice.
  • Circle-first mode is a fast pair-by-pair drill; well suited to warm-ups or a quick exit ticket.

Picking the right level

Easy uses words that all start with different letters, so first-letter comparison is enough. Medium mixes in pairs that share a first letter (so kids look at the second letter). Hard adds triples that share two letters, pushing them to the third letter — that's the Grade 3 CCSS expectation for using alphabetical order.
