How to use these flashcards
- Start with one list. The Dolch lists are sequenced — most kids move Pre-K → Kindergarten → Grade 1 → Grade 2 → Grade 3 across the school year. Master one before moving on rather than mixing them.
- Show, don’t sound out. Sight words are meant to be recognized instantly, not decoded. If a child pauses to sound out a word, that’s the word to keep practicing.
- Trace before you read. Switch the style to Outline for younger kids — they trace each word with a finger or pencil first, which anchors the shape before they have to recall it cold.
- Match the case to the book. Most storybooks use lowercase — that’s the default. Bump to Title Case for names and starts of sentences, UPPERCASE for early pre-reading practice.
What are Dolch sight words?
The Dolch list is a set of 220 “service words” plus 95 common nouns, compiled by Edward Dolch in 1936 from the words that appear most often in children’s books. They’re still the standard reading-fluency list in US elementary classrooms — a child who can read the Dolch list can read roughly 50–75% of the words in an average kindergarten storybook without decoding.
