Prefix and suffix practice: build the word, then take it apart

My son stalled on unhelpful for five seconds, then said it as one piece, then told me it was three. That's the whole lesson.

My son's reading stalled on "unhelpful" for a full five seconds. Then he said it as one piece, and then, unprompted, told me it was three pieces. That is the whole lesson in one word. Long words are mostly short words with bits stuck on, and a child who knows the bits can read words nobody has taught them.

What the sheet looks like

The prefix and suffix worksheet has four formats. Build the word prints "un + happy = ___." Break the word prints "unhappy = ___ + ___." Circle the prefix or suffix prints the whole word and the child rings the affix. Mixed alternates. Difficulty is Easy for first and second grade (un-, re-, -ing, -ed), Standard (pre-, dis-, mis-, -ful, -less, -ly, -er), or Challenge for grades 3 to 5 (sub-, inter-, trans-, -tion, -ness, -ment). Focus can be Prefixes only or Suffixes only. Pages hold 10 to 20 problems with an optional answer key.

Why it works

  • Build and Break are the same fact in two directions, and Break is the one reading needs. Meeting "unsafe" on a page means taking it apart on the spot.
  • Affixes carry meaning. Un- flips, re- repeats, -less removes. Ten affixes learned well make a few hundred words guessable.
  • Seeing the pieces side by side exposes the spelling. Hope + ful is hopeful with one l, and that is easier to notice on a sheet than in a story.

Who it suits

Six- and seven-year-olds take Build the word, Easy, Prefixes only. Ten- and eleven-year-olds can handle Break the word on Challenge, where -tion and inter- show up in words they're meeting in science and social studies. The sheet is about English affixes on everyday base words; once those are automatic, the Greek and Latin roots sheet moves on to the bases themselves.

A ten-problem Circle the prefix or suffix page makes a good two-minute warm-up before a spelling list.
