Bingo cards for sight words, numbers and pictures, every card different

The teacher calls said and twenty-four heads bend to look. Nobody is told they are reading. The only hard part is making enough different cards.

Twenty-four five-year-olds, a Friday afternoon, and sight words to review. The teacher next door calls “said” and twenty-four heads bend to look. Nobody is told they are reading. That is bingo, and the only hard part is making enough different cards, which is the part a generator does for you.

What the sheet looks like

The bingo card generator prints 3×3, 4×4 or 5×5 cards, one, two or four to a page, with every card different. The content can be numbers (1–20, 1–50, 1–100, or classic 1–75 with B-I-N-G-O columns), letters A to Z, words, or colorful pictures for children who cannot read yet. The word lists include sight words, colors, animals, food, shapes and numbers, days and months, Halloween and Christmas, or you can type your own list. A free space in the middle is optional, and the calling list prints as a separate page so you have everything to read out and cross off.

Why it works

  • Bingo is recognition under mild time pressure. The child hears “they” and has to find it among fifteen other words before the next call.
  • Everyone works on every call, not just the child whose turn it is. For a classroom that is twenty-four reps per word instead of one.
  • Your own word list makes it this week's spelling words, which is where the real value sits for a parent.

Who it suits

Pictures on a 3×3 grid work from age three. Numbers to 20 suit kindergarten, 1–100 is a fair first or second grade game, and sight words carry through second grade. Past third grade it becomes a party game rather than practice, which is still a fine use. For the same words outside a game, the sight words flashcards draw on the same list.

Dried beans make better markers than pencils, because the cards survive to be used again.
