Why short phrases beat single sight words for reading fluency
The words were not the problem. Reading them in a row was. Three-word phrases built only from sight words are the bridge.
A first grader I tutor could read every card in the Dolch deck on its own and still stalled on "come and see" in a book. The words were not the problem. Reading them in a row was. Fluency phrases are the bridge: three or four high-frequency words that get read as one chunk.
What the sheet looks like
Every phrase from the sight word phrases generator is built only from Dolch and Fry words, so a child who knows the list can read all of it. The formats are flash cards (eight to a page), fluency strips with 1 · 2 · 3 read boxes (ten per page), a two-column booklet page of 16 phrases, read and trace rows in a dotted font (six), or finish the sentence lines (eight). Phrase set 1 uses the most common words, sets 2 and 3 go further, and mixed draws from all three.
You can also type up to 16 phrases of your own, and print up to three pages with no phrase repeated across them.
Why it works
- Phrases make the eye move across words instead of landing on one. That is the skill books need and single-word cards cannot practice.
- The 1 · 2 · 3 boxes on the strips give repeated reading a visible finish line. Three reads, three ticks, done.
- Because every word is a known sight word, a stall is a fluency problem, not a decoding problem, and you know which one you are working on.
Who it suits
Kindergarten through second grade. Set 1 strips are right for a child who has most of the pre-primer Dolch list; set 3 and the finish-the-sentence page are for a second grader who reads the words but still sounds choppy. If single words are still shaky, the sight word flash cards are the step before this one. The booklet page is the one to send home, since 16 phrases on one sheet is a week of two-minute reads.
Cut the flash cards apart and keep the ones that stalled in a separate pile. That pile is tomorrow's lesson.
